Congratulations to Roddy Sims, the 28th scout of BSA Troop 213. Roddy was recognized at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday, October 29, at Church of the Palms. Roddy’s Eagle Project was the large pavilion on the grounds of Church of the Palms. Roddy also accomplished the requirements for three Eagle palms – Bronze, Gold, and Silver.

Roddy is currently a student at USCB studying computer science.

Roddey began his scouting career in 2011 as a Tiger Cub in Cub Scout Pack 213 in Bluffton, SC. He earned his Bobcat, Tiger, and Wolf ranks in 2012. He then earned his Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light before joining Troop 213 in January 2015. Soon after he joined the troop, he earned his Scout rank on March 1, 2015. After his first summer camp in 2015, he progressed through the early Scout ranks by earning his Tenderfoot badge on August 18, 2015; Second Class rank on February 23, 2016; and First Class Scout rank on March 8, 2016. As he progressed up through the ranks of Scouting, he earned his Star Scout rank on May 2, 2017, and Life Scout rank on April 3, 2018.

After completing all requirements for Eagle Scout, he went before the Eagle Scout Board of Review on May 23, 2022. Roddey earned a total of 38 merit badges. These badges include Archery, Aviation, Camping, Canoeing, Chess, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communication, Cooking, Emergency Preparedness, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science, Family Life, Fingerprinting, Fire Safety, First Aid, Fish and Wildlife Management, Forestry, Game Design, Geocaching, Geology, Indian Lore, Landscape Architecture, Law, Leatherwork, Mammal Study, Nature, Personal Fitness, Personal Management, Plant Science, Rifle Shooting, Small-Boat Sailing, Space Exploration, Swimming, Traffic Safety, and Welding. He also earned the BSA Kayaking award.

In addition to his Eagle Scout award, Roddey earned three Eagle Scout Palms. He is only the second Eagle Scout in Troop 213 to earn three Eagle Palms.

While in Scouting, Roddey has served in many Leadership positions in the Troop. He has been an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Bugler, Scribe, and Troop Guide. He was also elected by his troop to be in the Order of the Arrow, the national honor society for the Boy Scouts of America. The following year, he sealed his membership in the OA by earning Brotherhood. Roddey has also attended National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), a nationally recognized youth leadership training program for scouting.

For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Roddey led a team that built a 16×20 outdoor covered pavilion for the Church of the Palms in Okatie.

The pavilion includes 4 Picnic Tables with detachable seats and is used by the church regularly for worship and fellowship. Roddey graduated from May River High School this summer and is attending the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) with a major in Computer Science.
